2020 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that the median annual wage for Indiana healthcare administrators is $92,220, with those in the top ten percent earning $160,150.
Those are good numbers in a state that the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center found to have the third lowest cost of living in the Midwest. It’s also well-earned, with Indiana University highlighting the difficulty of providing pain management and behavioral health services in a state with one of the highest mortality rates from drug overdoses.
They are also numbers that are likely to continue to go up. The BLS reports that in 2020 Indiana’s 8,390 medical and health services administrators earned a combined total of nearly a billion dollars – $868 million.
Expected Job Growth for Indiana’s Healthcare Administration Professionals
According to BLS, Indiana employs a total of 191,070 healthcare practitioners and professionals in technical occupations. And where there are a lot of workers, there’s a great need for managers.
The state’s Department of Workforce Development foresees a 17.4 percent increase in healthcare administration positions over the decade between 2018 and 2028, with 800 positions opening each year across the state. That’s a combination of new job openings and turnover in existing positions.
Salaries for Indiana’s Healthcare Administrators by Location
Although Indianapolis has the greatest number of administrators employed, and the South Bend-Mishawaka area offers the highest median salary at $98,960, those in the top ten percent of the profession might be better off in Terre Haute, where the $189,110 annual salary at the 90th percentile is the best out of all the top urban centers in the state.
