New York is a great place to be a healthcare administrator, and that starts with the salary: the 2020 median pay was $134,310 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). For the top end of the profession, the 90th percentile where those with the most experience and education end up, the number was literally off the chart—somewhere over $208,000.
New York ranks third in overall employment level for healthcare administrators, and comes in first from all 50 states for offering the highest average salary at $156,140. New York City has the highest employment level for these professionals of all metro areas in the nation.
The investment in expertise at the healthcare administrative level has been paying off for the state, and as a result in 2020 these professionals took in a combined total of $3.8 billion in salaries.
Occupational Outlook for Healthcare Administrators in New York
Along the way, health care employment growth in the state more than doubled the overall rate of growth, topping 1.2 million people in 2017 according to the Office of the State Comptroller. The BLS reports a total of 364,355 working in hospitals throughout the state as of 2019. Private sector healthcare expanded in every part of the state, which makes the outlook for employment for healthcare administrators positive no matter where they are based.
The state Department of Labor sees more of the same coming along in the next decade. Through 2028, it predicts a 25.6 percent increase in healthcare administration jobs, totaling 3,400 openings per year. That’s higher than the national rate, and results from both new job creation and attrition in existing roles.

The Big Apple brings the big paychecks in New York, with the median salary for administrators there coming in more than $13,000 ahead of its next closest in-state rival Binghampton. In the upper ranks, however, while BLS doesn’t have exact numbers, several cities showed salaries above $208,000 in the 90th percentile.
